Decarbonization of Infrastructure

Rail

The modernization of the railway infrastructure and particularly its electrification will contribute significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions caused by rolling stock.

IP has a vast range of investments underway in PETI 3+ and Ferrovia 2020 which will increase the length of electrified rail by up to 83% of the total.

These investments will also enable diesel traction rolling stock to be replaced with electric traction, and capture freight and passenger traffic through a modal shift of transport. It is estimated that investment will bring about an annual reduction of 161 ktCO2eq.

Electrified rail track will also allow rolling stock to use power regenerating braking systems, providing around 10% of energy used.

We are aware that in the future an increasing number of hybrid models of transport systems will exist which are adapted to the models and needs of each region.

IP also participates in the study and development of other innovative solutions which seek to use other sources of energy, equipment and systems which will lead to a reduction in energy consumption and emissions.

Road

IP is further aware that the future of road use will be largely based on electric vehicles, allowing a significant reduction in CO2emissions.

We are committed together with our stakeholders to installing electric vehicle charging stations throughout the national network, integrated into the MOBI-e network. Due to the nature of our mission as an infrastructure management company, we are also gradually incorporating electric vehicles into our own fleet.

Mondego Mobility System

IP has developed a project to adapt existing railway infrastructure in the urban stretch of the Lousã branch line, Coimbra, so as to create a high-capacity bus transport service with its own channel. This is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) type system and is called the Mondego Metrobus.

When installed, this project will cover a sub-urban stretch of 30 km and an urban stretch of 12 km.

The Metrobus will be powered 100% by electrical energy via batteries installed in the vehicles, allowing CO2emissions to be reduced, while the change in habits and modal shift of users will also avoid emissions which would otherwise be caused.

The Mondego Mobility System Project (SMM), to be implemented by Infraestruturas de Portugal, S.A. and Metro Mondego, S.A., consists of a BRT type mobility system called “MetroBus” with electric traction (battery) on the former Lousã branch rail and in the Coimbra urban area, connecting Serpins, Lousã and Miranda do Corvo to Coimbra (serving Coimbra B station and the central axis of the city between the riverside and the city hospitals area).

Trajecto

The old railway channel is to be adapted as are public areas inside the city of Coimbra so as to meet the technical and specific requirements of MetroBus. There will be a dedicated channel and stops with public information systems and automatic ticketing machines, as well as traffic management which will prioritize the MetroBus and provide optimized operational support.

The main objective of SMM is to promote sustainable mobility by implementing an attractive and competitive mobility service, operated with electric buses, leading to a modal shift to more energy efficient transport with less emissions, in line with decarbonization goals for the transport sector.

IP investment includes the application approved by POSEUR, with the name “Mondego Mobility System – Application of a Metrobus System”, for which cohesion fund financing of 67.23% is expected.
