Active Mobility

Rail

The mobility of future inhabitants will be increasingly less dependent on cars, with greater demand for new active modes of mobility, particularly the use of bicycles, also contributing to a reduction in emissions.

This topic has been the focus of special attention by IP since 2001, when the National Greenways Plan was conceived with the aim of requalifying and reusing railway lines and channels which were no longer in use in several areas in the North, Center and Alentejo, specifically for non-motorized use.

IP is a member of the European Greenways Association, having registered the National and European brand name (ECOPISTAS). 11 Greenways have already been created: Minho, Famalicão, Guimarães, Tâmega, Sabor, Dão, Vouga, Montado, Mora, Corgo, Montijo.

Third Content It is also possible to make normal road infrastructure use compatible with modes of active mobility, such as on the EN 109 between Estarreja and Ponte da Varela, where during improvement work, IP built a 9 km cycle way.

IP is also represented in the Focal Points Network created by IMT to implement the “National Strategy for Active Cycling Mobility 2020-2030” (ENMAC), together with the Directorate-General of Education, the National Road Safety Authority and the National Authority of Portuguese Municipalities.
