Environmental Management during Design and Installation Work

The environmental management of IP assets can be clearly seen throughout the life cycle of road and rail infrastructure, including the design, construction and operation stages.

The aim of this management is to minimize the impacts which IP infrastructures have on the environment and the community in general. This goal is achieved by conducting the required environmental studies and by implementing environmental management measures during construction and in the operating phase.

In relation to the Environmental Project Management, projects which are not covered by the Environmental Impact Assessment Scheme (EIA) are still assessed by IP with regard to environmental constraints in order to obtain licensing prior to the start of work, when such projects coincide with access corridors and/or public utility restrictions or spatial planning.

A Environmental Management during Construction is an area with special focus at IP, where work follows two key principles:

  • Observance of environmental assessment criteria from the design stage during construction, integrating the measures set out in contract clauses.

  • Guarantee of compliance with conformity, legal and other obligations as determined by IP.

By means of clauses incorporated into Project Specifications, IP establishes a methodology for the development of an Environmental Management System or an Environmental Monitoring System used by the contractors, depending on the nature and complexity of the construction work. For example, current practices are indicated as applied in construction work so as to prevent and minimize environmental impacts, both during the construction as well as operating stages.

IP applies the same basis of action in contracts for the Provision of Maintenance Services, so as to ensure sound environmental management practices.
