Road Accidents

Evolution of road accidents in the IP road network

In the last decade, Portugal has seen considerable progress in the reduction of road accidents, and in 2019, there were 474 fatalities. The IP network accompanied this trend until 2016, and was the network which achieved the greatest reduction over the last 10 years, although from 2016 to 2018, an increase was recorded.

In the last 20 years, while network road accidents fell by 70.9%, the IP network saw a reduction of 81.8%.

PORTUGAL AND EUROPE
Terceiro Conteudo

Portugal has made significant progress with respect to the reduction of road accidents. Although figures were 23% above the EU28 average in 2019, it should be remembered that 20 years ago, Portugal had almost three times more fatalities per million inhabitants than the EU average.

Contributing to this achievement was the considerable investment made in recent decades, more specifically the implementation of the National Road Plan (PRN2000), which increased its execution rate from 23.0% to 74.0%.

This success is due to the work carried out by IP on the road infrastructure, developments in vehicle safety and the policies adopted by Portugal and the European Union to reduce road accidents.

Highlighted in the image below is the average of the 28 Member States of the European Union for the number of fatalities per million inhabitants, with respect to figures for Portugal in 2019.

Awareness campaigns

On European Road Safety Day, 9 May 2019, IP signed a cooperation agreement with the Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) to promote the National Road Safety Campaign “Let’s Reflect”.

This campaign involved a range of information and awareness actions for pedestrians, particularly children, the elderly and cyclists, warning them of the need to remain vigilant to the danger they are exposed to on roads, especially on urban crossings.

IP promoted this campaign recommending pilgrims to walk on alternative roads with less traffic, thus avoiding main roads (IP) and secondary roads (IC), and provided other recommendations for all pilgrims and drivers urging them to comply with safety rules.
