Scope of Work

The modernization of the stretch on the Évora line between Elvas and Caia, concluded on 12/02/2020, included the following work:

  • Expansion of the Elvas Railway Station to allow use by 750-meter freight trains;

  • Optimization and improvement of lines II, III, IV, V, VI and VII;

  • Adaptation of the station building for the installation of new technical rooms;

  • Raising height of platforms;

  • Improving passenger access so as to ensure mobility for all;

  • Full renovation of the track superstructure;

  • Conservation work on platform, improvement of drainage, stabilization of slopes and construction of support and containment structures;

  • Installation of infrastructure for future implementing of electronic signaling (ETCS and GSM-R) and telecontrol of overhead contact line;

  • Construction of overhead contact line support structures for electrification;

  • Construction of split-level roads and re-establishments to remove 4 level crossings on this stretch;

  • Replacement of decks and reinforcing of pillars on centuries old rail bridges, the Caiola and Caia Bridges.

Benefits

The modernization of this stretch will act as a complement to the new rail channel under construction between Évora and the Eastern line, in a logic of evolutionary development of the rail links to Spain, under the framework of the TransEuropean Transport Network (TEN-T), the rail goods link between Portuguese ports and the rest of Europe, while also providing a passenger link. Conditions will also be created for technical and operational compatibility in the connection to adjacent stretches, and compliance with the technical provisions of interoperability.
