The stretch on the Beira Alta line between Pampilhos and Santa Comba Dão is 33 km in length (Pk 51,120 to Pk 84,850).

Scope of Work

Modernization on the stretch of the Beira Alta line between Pampilhos and Santa Comba Dão includes the following work:

  • track;

  • earthmoving;

  • drainage;

  • special structures – bridges and viaducts;

  • standard special structures – elevated and underground crossings;

  • re-establishments and parallel pathways;

  • containment structures;

  • stations and secondary stops;

  • fixed electrical traction installations;

  • base infrastructure for signaling and telecommunications;

  • RCT+TP;

  • affected services;

  • minimization measures.

This work involves the complete replacement of the track superstructure with use of multi-purpose concrete monoblock sleepers and 60 E1 track, as well as alteration of the layout the Mortágua Station, allowing the crossing of 750 m trains and the optimization of operating conditions.

Remodeling work will take place at Mortágua Station and secondary stations, including the raising of height, width and length of platforms. Buildings will be also be modernized and accessibility improved. The Luso and Mortágua level crossings will be removed and split-level solutions will be constructed. Also included is the rehabilitation / reinforcement of 10 tunnels and 8 bridges.

Construction of support infrastructure is also planned for signaling and telecommunications, as well as the adaptation of fixed electrical traction and implementation of RCT+TP.<

Further work in the modernization of this stretch involves the construction of a new 3.2 km direct electrified line, between the Northern line and the Beira Alta line, to the north of the Pampilhosa Station. This new connection referred to as the Mealhada Transition, includes:

  • Construction of a railway viaduct of around 1.2 km in length;

  • Construction of a technical station with an 820 m passing line, between limit pilings, to act as an entry and exit buffer for the Northern line;

  • Construction of support infrastructure for signaling and telecommunications, as well as fixed electrical traction facilities and implementation of RCT+TP.

Benefits

Modernization of this stretch will allow rail traffic in the North-South direction, directly from the Northern line to the Beira Alta line, providing increased capacity in national rail management.
This work will help achieve a reduction in emissions of over 120 million tons Co2eq by 2046, while also increasing the number of trains by 20% per year and the number of tons transported per year on this line by 26%.
