Length of the Covilhã – Guarda stretch on the Beira Baixa line, from Pk 165 + +194 to Pk 211+694 (46 km).

Scope of Work

Modernization on the stretch of the Beira Baixa line between Covilhã and Guarda includes the following work:

  • Complete renovation of 36 km of track (IP has already concluded 10 km of this stretch);

  • Electrification of full length of stretch;

  • Rehabilitation work on six centuries old, metal railway bridges:

    - Carpinteira Bridge (1890) - Total length 52 meters and maximum height 25 meters;

    - Corge Bridge (1891) - Total length 210 meters and maximum height 33 meters;

    - Zêzere II Bridge (1890) - Total length 121 meters and maximum height 7 meters;

    - Macainhas Bridge (1890) - Total length 130 meters and maximum height 18 meters;

    - Gogos Bridge (1890) - Total length 130 meters and maximum height 30 meters;

    - Penha da Barroca Bridge (1888) – Total length 121 meters and maximum height 35 meters.

  • Remodeling of the Caria, Belmonte, Maçainhas, Benespera and Barracão secondary stops;

  • Expansion of the Belmonte station for trains 650 meters in length;

  • Automation of 18 level crossings through the installation of half barriers and removal of the LC at 206,960 and construction of an underground crossing in Barracão;

  • Installation of drainage systems and slope stabilization work;

  • Construction of transition solutions on the Beiras connection between the Beira Alta and Beira Baixa lines, with single electrified track 1,500 meters in length. New railway bridge over the River Diz, 237.8 meters in length;

  • Installation of electronic signaling and telecommunications.

Benefits

The modernization of this stretch will close the network consisting of the Northern line and Beira Alta and Beira Baixa lines thus promoting rail transport and the connection to Spain and inter-regional connections. It also represents the start of a new life cycle for the infrastructure, now prepared for the future migration to European gauge.
