Length of the Alfarelos - Pampilhosa stretch on the Northern line from Pk 194+500 to Pk 230+630 (35 km).

Scope of Work

The modernization of the stretch on the Northern line between Alfarelos and Pampilhosa includes the following work:

  • Work in the first phase, which has already been concluded, consisted of full renovation of the track superstructure, on a 35 kilometer double track stretch, and involved:

    • Raising of height and extension of platforms at 3 stations and 5 secondary stops;

    • Raising of height and extension of platforms at 3 stations and 5 secondary stops;

    • Adaptation of the overhead contact line systems and installation of traction current return system and soil protection;

    • Installation of 4 track change devices (AMV) to allow the crossing of 750 meter trains.

  • The second phase on the same stretch includes the following work:

    • Conversion of the signaling building into a passenger building, raising of height of platforms, construction of shelters and elevated pedestrian crossing;

    • Alteration of layout of Alfarelos with expansion of three new passing lines for trains of up to 750 m in length and corresponding adaptation of the signaling systems, Centralized Lisbon Command Centre and automatic speed control;

    • Construction of two elevators providing access to elevated road crossing (PSR) at km 200+571 on the Northern line;

    • Construction of elevated passenger crossings to the north of the Formoselha secondary stop, at the Ameal secondary stop, Taveiro Station, Casais secondary stop, and at km 217,826 to close the level crossing;

    • Construction of an underground pedestrian crossing at the Espadaneira secondary stop;

    • Construction of an elevated road crossing to eliminate the level crossing at km 218+541, located to the south of the Triunfo factory;

    • Construction of an elevated road crossing at km 223+439;

    • Construction of an underground road crossing at km 227+739 to close the level crossing at km 227+680.

Modernization of this stretch will increase the safety and flexibility of operations, increase capacity for freight services (movement of 750m compositions), reduce long-haul travel times, start a new life cycle for infrastructure and reduce IP’s annual OPEX.
