On 11 March 2016 the Program Contract for the rail sector was signed between Infraestruturas de Portugal and the Portuguese State. This contract defines and governs the terms and conditions of the provision by Infraestruturas de Portugal of the public service obligations for the infrastructure management of the National Rail Network (RFN), for the period from 01/01/2016 to 31/12/2020, as well as the compensation to be paid to the Portuguese State.

On 31 December 2020, an addendum to the Contract Program was signed, which extended the contract for a period of six months (from 01/01/2021 to 30/06/2021), maintaining the remaining conditions.
