IP activity leads to five major groups of waste:
  • CDW – Construction and Demolition Waste, resulting from infrastructure construction and maintenance;

  • OPW – Operating Waste, resulting from infrastructure operation;

  • SUW - Solid Urban Waste, resulting from administration work;

  • PAW- Passive Waste, resulting from past situations;

  • EMW – Waste as a product of Emergencies, resulting from intervention in emergency situations.

  • Condições de armazenamento preliminar dos resíduos resultantes da atividade interna, no Terminal da Bobadela.
  • Condições de armazenamento preliminar dos resíduos resultantes da atividade interna, no Entroncamento – COMC.

The IP Group Waste Management Program, integrated into the Sustainability and Efficiency Program (SEE-RES) seeks to structure the management model for each type of waste. Documentary support is provided by the IP Waste Management Manual.

As a management principle, IP also uses legally established entities which manage waste flows. We also conduct campaigns to collect Electrical and Electronic Waste (EEW), used oils, used tires, etc

For more detailed information on work carried out by IP in this area, please consult the following links:

Sub-contractors are contractually obliged to correctly manage the CDW group of waste, and IP oversees compliance and validates the respective Prevention and Management of Construction and Demolition Waste Plan (PPGRCD), during construction work or at the end of contracts for the provision of services.

As an example, three IP waste management processes (for OPW and PAW) were conducted in 2020 at different facilities around the country which employed specific management plans in line with regulations.

IP also promotes ongoing improvement in preliminary storage conditions for proper waste handling, as shown in two examples:

With respect to SUW, IP has conducted regular campaigns with the principal aim of increasing the collection of paper and card, plastic and metal packaging and glass so that these materials enter the recycling circuit instead of being simply deposited in landfills.
