Climate Change

Climate change is the main threat to our planet with serious consequences for the future of society in general, from social, economic and environmental perspectives.

The transport sector is vital for the functioning of society and the economy, but it also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions (GGE). IP is playing an important role in the decarbonization of this sector a nível nacional.

The effects of climate change are now impacting on the IP infrastructure, and as such we are drafting our Climate Change Resilience Plan to be implemented in our road and rail networks.

In larger scale projects, IP is also conducting studies to assess and adapt to climate change, so as to make our infrastructures more resilient to climate change.

Climate Change Resilience Plan for Infrastructure

The Climate Change Resilience Plan for Infrastructure covers the rail, road and telematics networks and seeks to comply with objectives to inform on the risks associated with the effects of climate change and assess the respective impacts on infrastructures, establish specific measures to prevent and adapt to climate change in a succinct, organized and coherent manner for all three networks, providing them with greater resilience.

The aim of these studies is to identify and assess the vulnerabilities and risks caused by the potential future change in climate patterns on road and rail infrastructures with respect to the different components and services provided. This will apply both to modernization as well as new construction projects, and propose adaptation measures to be included in the design stage.

These studies follow the methodology set out in the JASPERS Guidance Note, and include a first stage compiling available information and identifying vulnerabilities and climate risks. This will be followed by an assessment of the climate risk and finally, in the drawing up of the measures which must be implemented in the infrastructure.

IP is conducting these studies for a number of lines/stretches of the National Railway Network which are the object of investment under PETI 3+, in Ferrovia 2020, and some have already been concluded. In addition to such studies, also of note is the study conducted for the Mondego MetroBus.
