Length of the Espinho - Vila Nova de Gaia stretch on the Northern line from Pk 318+600 to Pk 332+780 (14 km).

Scope of Work

Modernization of the stretch on the Northern line between Espinho and Vila Nova de Gaia includes the following work:

  • Complete replacement of the track superstructure;

  • Conservation/renovation of the track substructure at certain points;

  • Stabilization/conservation of slopes;

  • Water crossing alteration work;

  • Alteration of layout at the Granja and Vila Nova de Gaia stations;

  • Installation of two new opposite track diagonals between Miramar and Francelos;

  • Installation of 2 passing lines of 750 m in useful length, to allow freight trains to pass, north of the Francelos secondary stop;

  • Complete replacement of the overhead contact line system with the LP12 type between Km 318,600 and Km 327,000 (area of the passing lines to the north of Francelos);

  • Complete renovation of catenary posts;

  • Adaptation of the overhead contact line at the Vila Nova de Gaia station due to work/changes to the level of the track, more specifically insertion/replacement of AMV and possible skinning of track;

  • Overhead contact line along remaining stretch of track;

  • Implementation of the Traction Return Current + Soil and Protection (RCT+TP) system;

  • Construction of four underground road crossings (PK 315+480, 320+968, 323+845, 324+560);

  • Construction of four underground light transport crossings (PK 319+902, 325+252, 326+546, 331+754);

  • Construction of five underground pedestrian crossings (PK 318+971, 322+763, 326+060, 327+675, 332+321);

  • Construction of four elevated pedestrian crossings (PK 315+971, 320+434, 321+709, 329+234);

  • Replacement of deck of the underground road crossing at PK 332+531;

  • Installation of connection paths to remove pedestrian level crossings;

  • Fencing of rail channel.

As part of this investment, an electronic signaling system has already been installed and put into service between Esmoriz and Gaia and integrated into the Porto Operational Command Center (OCC), as well as an automatic speed control system and telecommunications systems.

Benefits

Modernization of this stretch will increase the safety and flexibility of operations, increase capacity for freight services (movement of 750m compositions), reduce long-haul travel times, start a new life cycle for infrastructure and reduce IP’s annual OPEX.
